Like most people, I’ve long thought that Ricky Martin is hot — or at least I have since he cut his hair shorter! For example, in recent pics (one’s in which he’s got short hair and has matured) Martin is HOT:
I don’t think he was all that hot when he was younger and had long hair:
Now that he’s out, he’s even hotter. I first heard this single when he sang it with Joss Stone on Oprah. At the time I was skeptical about it. It felt wrong for him to be singing a heterosexual love song after having just come out.
He just released the video, which has clearly dumped the whole heterosexual angle and gone for the gay audience:
For that reason — and because it’s a good adult-contemporary kind of song — I’m making it my song of the week. Plus, it’s catchy. And Martin looks hot in a hoodie and a v-neck tee!
Here are the lyrics:
I’m as happy as I can be
Cause I’m allergic to tragedy
The doctor says something’s wrong with me
The smile on my face has no remedy
So Baby, don’t say no
Come on and just say yes
You know it’s time to keep it simple
Let’s take a chance and hope for the best
Life is short, so make it what you wanna
Make it good, don’t wait until mañana
I think I’m cool cause your name’s on this heart shaped tattoo
Now the best thing about me is you
I cryin’ days are now history [history]
I had a change of philosophy [philosophy]
I take each day as it comes to me
And I won’t take myself all that seriously
So Baby, don’t say no
Come on and just say yes
You know it’s time to keep it simple
Let’s take a chance, and hope for the best
Life is short, so make it what you wanna
Make it good, don’t wait until mañana
I think I’m cool cause your name’s on this heart shaped tattoo
Now, the best thing about me is you.
It’s you
Oh baby, now I see it’s you
(Now the best thing, the best thing)
Oh yes it is
(It’s true)
Take off your shoes, lay back, and take a load off
Give me your blues, let me love it away
Nothing to lose, so don’t act like such a grownup
Stay out all night in the moonlight with me
(Don’t say no; don’t say no)
Come on and just say yes
You know it’s time to keep it simple
Let’s take a chance and hope for the best
Life is short, so make it what you wanna
Make it good, don’t wait until mañana
I think I’m cool cause your name’s on this heart shaped tattoo
Now the best thing about me is you
It’s you
Now the best thing, the best thing, the best thing
About me is you
Now the best thing about me is you.
The best thing about me is you.
The best thing about me is you.
The best thing about me is you
I can’t stand Ricky Martin, not before, not now. Sure he is cute and some people might like his music. I am not one of them. But what bothers me is that he has orchestrated his coming out as this act of courage and truthfulness when in reality he is just trying to change his core audience and market. Right before his record release of course. His interview with Oprah was painful to watch because he kept acting as if, yes, he is out, but his family land love life are out of bounds, still a mystery for those who care. I guess we have come to the end of “coming out” as the painful experience that would set us free. Now it’s something that celebrities can time and manage for marketing and sympathy. I am waiting for Travolta’s moment.
