Suddenly, I can’t get Cyndi Lauper’s “Money Changes Everything” out of my head:

I  love the original version, which is the one stuck in my head, but I also thought I would look around and see what other versions there are. I found this one from Lauper’s 2005 acoustic album, which rerecords some of her biggest hits in acoustic duets with other artists:

I’ve since downloaded this album, and I really like it. Lauper has a bit of raspiness to her voice in this version of “Money Changes Everything” that really appeals to me. This version feels like the point of view of a more mature woman rather than the carefree younger woman of the original version.

Listening to the song now, the line that sticks in my head is, “It’s all in the past now, money changes everything.” Part of how I interpret this song now is that some sudden event (a positive one in this case, rather than a death or something like it) can change everything in a blink of an eye. Suddenly, what seemed so important the day before is all in the past.

Today I’m feeling this sentiment all the more. April 15th is a day that’s been really important to me for the past several years, as it’s the anniversary of the beginning of an important relationship in my life. Suddenly, that relationship feels like it’s all in the past. The drama, the desire, the confusion, it all feels like it belongs to yesterday rather than today. I’m sure I will always value that relationship, but I can’t really seem to work up any particular feelings about it any more. For the first time, it feels like it’s all in the past, which is probably a very good thing.

Here are the lyrics:

I said: I’m sorry baby
I’m leaving you tonight.
I found someone new
he’s waitin’ in the car outside.

Ah honey
how could you do it
we swore each other everlasting love
I said yeah
I know
but when we did

There was one thing: We were thinking not about –
Money
money changes everything.
I said money
money changes everything.
We think
we know what we’re doin’
we don’t know about.
It’s all in the past now – money changes everything.
They shake your hand and they smile and they buy you a drink.
They say: We’ll be your friends

we’ll stick with you till the end.
Ah
but everybody’s only looking out for themselves.
And you say well
who can you trust?
I’ll tell you it’s just nobody else as the money.
Money changes everything

I said money
money changes everything
We think
we know what we’re doin’

we don’t pull the strings.
It’s all in the past now – money changes everything.
Money
money changes everything.
We think
we know what we’re do
We don’t pull the strings.
It’s all in the past now – money changes ever
Money changes everything
money changes everything

Money changes everything
money changes everything
