On Sunday I posted my annual list of favorite songs/tracks of the previous year. Today I’ll list my favorite music videos of 2012. Be warned: my taste in videos tends towards the really, really gay!
1. At the top of my list is Father Tiger’s Christmas themed video, “On Christmas Day”:
I love the hipster, bearish Santa Claus, the good will message, and the modern take on Christmas. And the song is great — I would have listed it among my top ten songs of the year but I somewhat arbitrarily decided I didn’t want to include a Christmas song in that list. I’m really looking forward to this duo’s releases this year.
2. Number 2 on my list is Pink’s “Try,” a video that beautifully uses dance as a metaphor for the ups and downs of a relationship:
This video reportedly made Pink’s mother uncomfortable, but I think it’s a beautiful video as long as one takes it as metaphor rather than as a romanticizing of domestic violence. This is another song that could easily have been on my top 25 list but just didn’t quite make it. And Colt Prattes is hot!
3. Next up is Mika’s video for “Origin of Love,” one of my favorites songs of the year:
I love how ambitious this video is. It’s like a mini-movie rather than just a music video — as one reviewer put it, it’s cinematic. And Jorge Arecheta is hot — male hotness is a frequent theme in my favorite videos!
4. Jay Brannan produced my favorite video of 2008, “Housewife.” I also love his video for “Rob Me Blind”:
His videos have a low-budget feel about them, which is part of what makes them so innovative. He may not have lots of money for special effects, but he uses a great deal of creativity in his work.
5. I love The Killers — whenever someone asks who my favorite band is I usually say them. Their new album is really good, as usual. The best video off the album is “Here with Me,” which is crazy and amazing and delightful. And it stars Winona Ryder!
And Brandon Flowers is hot!
6. Next up is “Hood” by Perfume Genius:
This video was a little controversial since it stars Arpad Miklos, a famous gay porn star who sadly committed suicide earlier this week. I think it’s a beautiful rendering of the song. Miklos has never been my type, but he looks great holding PG!
7. RuPaul’s Drag Race is one of my favorite shows on TV. Tied for number six on my list are two stars from the show, Mimi Imfurst in Xelle’s “Queen” and the diva herself, RuPaul in her own video for “Glamazon,” one of her best videos ever!
8. While Willam was on RuPaul’s Drag Race I wasn’t a huge fan. I just didn’t “get” him. But now I love everything he does, and he’s clearly in line to become the most successful RuPaul alum. Who else would do a cover of “Stand By Your Man” (with Drake Jensen) and succeed so well at it?
9. “From Nowhere” is a simple video by Dan Croll, but I love the camera work and how it catches the song’s cool vibe:
10. And finally, I thought I would choose one more great, gay-themed video from 2012: Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”:
For me, this video proves just how cool younger people tend to be about us gays — the gay twist is part of what contributed to this song’s mega success this year rather than hurt it. I think that’s a great sign if the times! And Holden Nowell is hot!
